Breast Symmetry in Reconstructive Surgery
Will the Reconstructed Breast Match My Other Breast?
Essential to the process of breast reconstruction is the attention to every detail, including planning breast reconstruction with consideration of the woman's unique shape and size of the "other breast". Breast symmetry is critical to correcting a deformity and maintaining a sense of "wholeness", well-being and a positive self-image.
Depending on the individual disease treatments, personal desires or expectations, breast reconstruction may also present opportunities to correct the size or shape of the other breast - including a breast lift (mastopexy), breast augmentation(augmentation mammoplasty), breast reduction ( reduction mammoplasty) or fat grafting (removing fat from an area where there is excess to an area needed to improve contour) to achieve the most optimal symmetry. These procedures for breast symmetry and contouring are also part of the reconstruction process and are typically covered by insurance.
Whatever the case, Dr. Lynch will fully discuss your options to insure the best possible symmetry through your breast reconstruction.
In all cases, it should be remembered that breast reconstructive surgery is both art and science. There is no substitute for experience and training.
Dr. Lynch’s advanced fellowship training in breast reconstruction was completed at the world renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. He is widely recognized as one of New Jersey’s most experienced and best trained breast reconstructive surgeons.
