Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammoplasty)
Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that includes using a silicone or saline breast implant to make a woman's breast larger. This procedure is often done to improve the cosmetic appearance of the breasts. Many times, breast augmentation is a part of a breast reconstruction plan, to improve symmetry with the opposite breast.
The operation is fairly short, lasting only a few hours, and is completed under general anesthesia. Most women are able to go home the same day.
To insert the implant, there are four options for placement of the surgical incision. The incision may be placed slightly above the fold of the breast ( inframammary incision), around your nipple and areolar complex (peri-areolar incision), under the arm (axillary incision) or through an incision around the belly button (peri –umbilical incision). Each of these techniques has specific advantages and disadvantages that Dr. Lynch will review when planning your procedure.
There are also options to consider when selecting a breast implant. The implants include Saline filled implants, Silicone filled implants and Form Stabilized Silicone Gel implants ( also known as “gummy bear implants).
The increase in breast size and shape implant is very specific to each woman’s individual body and her desired appearance —Dr. Lynch will discuss with you which size and type of implant is best suited to achieve your personal goal.
As with any surgery, some discomfort, swelling, and bruising may occur, and for most patients usually resolves in a few days. Recovery after breast augmentation will require avoiding strenuous activity and heavy lifting for a period of time immediately following the procedure. Surgical scars will be placed deliberately to minimize perception and will fade over time.
