Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammoplasty)

Breast Augmentation New JerseyCosmetic breast surgery includes many individualized options for changing the size and shape of your breasts. Breast Augmentation with implants or Augmentation Mammoplasty is a surgical procedure that uses breast implants to enlarge and shape your breasts.   The number of women having breast augmentation surgery  has increased more than 400% in the last 10 years.   Surgical techniques and breast implant technology have also improved dramatically since 1998.  For most patients, breast augmentation is much less invasive, offers more options and provides a more satisfying outcome than ever before.

Dr. Matthew Lynch specializes in breast surgery and breast reconstruction techniques.  This specialization in breast reconstruction is an obvious advantage to the patient interested specifically in breast augmentation.   Dr. Lynch’s highly specialized skill, including microsurgery, and his passion for reconstruction makes Dr. Lynch the most frequently requested Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in the central New Jersey region for the most complex breast reconstruction and breast augmentation cases.   Dr. Matthew Lynch spends time with each woman considering breast augmentation to better understand her needs, desires and expectations regarding breast augmentation and breast implants.  Based on this discussion, the woman and Dr. Lynch create a plan for care for her breast augmentation surgery and follow up care.

For the woman interested in breast augmentation, there are many considerations.   These considerations include what type of implant best suits the individual woman, what size implant is most desirable, placement of the implant and location of the incision and, as for all surgery, an understanding of the potential risks associated with breast augmentation compared to the potential benefits of breast augmentation for each woman.  Some of the risks associated with breast augmentation surgery include infection, bleeding, hematoma, capsule contracture and displacement of the implant.   Dr. Lynch will review each of these potential risks in detail with each woman considering breast augmentation surgery.

Breast augmentation surgery is a very personal decision.  Each patient may experience her own individual risks and benefits following breast augmentation surgery, however the most recent clinical data suggests that most women who undergo breast augmentation surgery are extremely happy with the breast augmentation, and gain an increased sense of self esteem and self confidence.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breast Lift New JerseyA breast lift may be performed to return a youthful shape and lift to breasts that have sagged as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, loss of the skin's natural elasticity or simply the effects of aging and gravity. Sometimes, the procedure may be combined with a breast augmentation for added breast fullness and shape.

The procedure takes approximately 2 hours and is usually performed under general anesthesia. For additional information or to view an animated video plasticsurgery.org

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

For many women, large breasts may cause physical and emotional discomfort. The size and weight of large breasts may result in self-consciousness, improper posture, neck and back pain, indentations from bra straps, skin rashes and at times, difficulty breathing. Breast reduction surgery is usually performed to provide relief from these symptoms.

Breast Reduction New JerseyDuring the procedure, an incision is made around the areola (area around your nipple), down the breast and around the crease beneath the breast. The excess breast tissue, fat and skin is removed. Sometimes liposuction is also used to remove excess tissue or fat from the underarm area. The breasts are then lighter, shaped , and often in a healthier proportion to the rest of the body. In some cases, when only fat needs to be removed from the breasts, liposuction alone may be used for breast reduction.

The procedure takes approximately 3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. For additional information or to view an animation of the procedure plasticsurgery.org.

Breast Reconstruction

For women who are faced with the decision of breast removal (mastectomy), modern surgical techniques- including microsurgery techniques- make it possible to restore your body image and create a natural looking breast after the mastectomy.  Reconstruction will preserve the feminine silhouette and alleviate the need for a prosthetic garment.

Breast reconstruction can be performed at the same time as the mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) so that a breast mound is in place immediately following the mastectomy.  Reconstruction is also an option months or years after the mastectomy.  There are several ways to reconstruct a breast, both with and without implants.  Dr. Lynch will take time to review all reconstructive options and work together with you to decide which option is best for you.

When you are considering options in breast reconstruction as part of the healing process from breast cancer surgery, Dr. Lynch works closely with your breast surgeon, your medical oncologist and radiation oncologist, at the time of your diagnosis or even months or years after your cancer surgery to ensure collaborative and comprehensive care.

Breast Implants

Breast reconstruction can be performed using saline or silicone implants.  For most women after a mastectomy, the skin and chest muscle (pectoralis muscle) needs to be stretched (or expanded) before the final implant is placed.  A tissue expander is placed under the chest muscle and then gradually (over a period of weeks) filled with saline until the desired size is reached. The second stage of reconstruction then includes removing the tissue expander and placing a permanent silicone gel or saline breast implant.

Latissimus Dorsi Flap

The Latissimus Dorsi Flap is an autologous (your own tissue) procedure for breast reconstruction.  The back muscle (latissimus dorsi muscle) and an area of fat and skin are rotated from the back to the chest area to create a breast.  For most women, this reconstructive procedure also includes an implant (tissue expander) in addition to your own tissue.  The latissimus muscle provides added volume and coverage of the implant, creating a breast that feels natural and is more symmetrical in weight and shape to the opposite breast.  The second stage of reconstruction then includes removing the tissue expander and placing a permanent silicone gel or saline breast implant.

TRAM FLAP (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous Flap)

The TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous) Flap is an autologous (your own tissue) procedure for breast reconstruction. The abdominal muscle (rectus abdominis) and the lower abdominal skin and fat are rotated from the abdominal area to the chest area to create a breast that feels most natural and is most symmetrical in weight and shape to the opposite breast. The TRAM Flap can be performed using a pedicle technique (the transplanted tissue remains connected to the blood supply) or it can be performed  as a  Free TRAM Flap (the transplanted tissue is re-connected to the breast area using a specialized microsurgical technique). Dr. Lynch has specialized training in advanced microsurgical techniques.

DIEP FLAP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap)

The DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap) is an autologous (your own tissue) procedure for breast reconstruction. This procedure is very similar to a TRAM flap, requiring advanced microsurgical technique. The rectus abdominis muscle that contains the blood supply is spared, and the blood supply is separated from the muscle. The skin and fat is then attached to the blood vessels in the chest area to create a breast that feels most natural and is most symmetrical in weight and shape to the opposite breast.
